Key takeaways

  • ChatGPT’s share of AI chatbot traffic fell from 87% to about 55% in eighteen months.
  • Google Gemini grew from roughly 6% to 27% of chatbot web visits in the same window.
  • Claude’s web visits quadrupled in one quarter, from 203 million in January to 824 million in April.
  • Anthropic filed for an IPO on 1 June 2026 at a $965 billion valuation.
  • ChatGPT still leads outright, with 900 million weekly users and the top Cloudflare ranking.

As of June 2026, ChatGPT holds about 55% of worldwide AI chatbot web traffic, down from 87% in early 2025. Google Gemini holds roughly 27%, Claude 8%, DeepSeek 4% and Grok 3%. ChatGPT still leads every ranking, but its lead has halved in eighteen months.

ChatGPT’s grip on the AI market is slipping faster than almost anyone predicted. The AI chatbot market share 2026 data shows its slice of generative AI web traffic falling from 87% in early 2025 to around 55% today, while Google Gemini has more than quadrupled its share and Claude has become the fastest-growing assistant on the chart.

In our client work across the UK and further afield, we now see enquiries arriving from Claude and Perplexity citations, not just Google and ChatGPT. The traffic sources businesses depend on are fragmenting in real time and most websites are still optimised for a single engine.

Here are the June 2026 numbers, why they contradict each other depending on who is counting, what this week’s Anthropic IPO filing changes and what a business website should actually do about it.

What does the AI chatbot market share data show in June 2026?

ChatGPT still leads, but the gap behind it has collapsed. Similarweb-derived tracking reported by Tom’s Guide puts ChatGPT’s share of generative AI web traffic at its lowest point since 2023, down roughly 30 percentage points in a year. Momentic’s June 2026 report measures the seven largest chatbots by worldwide web visits:

ChatbotShare of web visitsTrend
ChatGPT54.7%Down from 76.5% in February 2025
Google Gemini27.4%Up from 5.6%, roughly 104% growth in six months
Claude8.2%Web visits up 306% in one quarter
DeepSeek4.1%Slipping after its early 2025 spike
Grok2.8%Slow growth
Perplexity1.5%Stable, strong in research queries
Microsoft Copilot1.3%Flat as a standalone web app

Claude’s quarter is the one practitioners are talking about: 203 million web visits in January 2026 to 824 million in April. Off a small base, but no other assistant on the chart is compounding at that rate.

Why is ChatGPT losing market share?

Distribution is beating product. Gemini does not need to win a download decision because it ships inside Android, Chrome, Search and Workspace. Google reported in February that the Gemini app passed 750 million monthly active users, with AI Overviews inside Search reaching a further 2 billion people every month. When the assistant is already on the device and inside the search box, share flows to it by default.

The important nuance: ChatGPT is not shrinking. OpenAI announced 900 million weekly active users in February 2026, more than double the year before, with 50 million paying subscribers. The pie has grown so fast that ChatGPT can add hundreds of millions of users and still lose 30 points of share.

Claude’s growth runs on a different fuel. Its gains are concentrated in business and developer use, the segment most likely to pay, which is exactly why this week’s IPO filing landed so confidently.

Who is winning the AI war? It depends who is counting

The honest answer is that the winner changes with the measuring stick and any chart that does not say which stick it used is misleading you. There are three in circulation right now:

  1. Web visits (Similarweb-style panels). This is where the dramatic headline comes from: ChatGPT at roughly 55%, Gemini surging. It under-counts assistants used inside apps rather than on websites.
  2. Network traffic rankings. Cloudflare’s live ranking tells a different story: ChatGPT has held #1 every single day since at least February, Claude sits at #2, Perplexity #3 and Gemini only #4. Gemini’s in-product usage does not register as standalone traffic.
  3. Official user numbers. OpenAI quotes weekly active users, Google quotes monthly active users. The two are not comparable and both companies know it.

So when a chart claims Gemini is about to overtake ChatGPT or that ChatGPT is untouchable, check the footnote. Both claims are true on one dataset and false on another. We use all three when advising clients, because each one predicts a different kind of customer behaviour.

What does Anthropic’s IPO change?

It confirms the AI war now has three permanent fronts. Anthropic, the company behind Claude, confidentially filed for an IPO on 1 June 2026 after a $65 billion funding round valued it at $965 billion, briefly eclipsing OpenAI. Euronews reports a revenue run-rate of roughly $47 billion, up from $10 billion a year earlier, with a listing window targeted for October.

For everyone else, the practical signal is simple: the first AI pure-play to face public-market scrutiny will fight even harder for the business and developer traffic where Claude already over-performs. Nobody is consolidating this market any time soon. Multi-engine visibility is not a phase, it is the new baseline.

What should your business do about the AI traffic war?

Stop optimising for one engine and start measuring all of them. Five moves, in order of impact:

  1. Audit where your AI mentions come from. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity what they say about your business and your category. The gaps will surprise you.
  2. Structure content so any engine can cite it. Direct answers high on the page, dated facts, named sources, FAQ blocks. The same playbook covers all four engines and we’ve broken it down in how to get cited in AI Overviews.
  3. Understand the selection signals. Each assistant weighs reviews, mentions and structured data differently. Our breakdown of how ChatGPT picks which brands to recommend covers the seven signals that matter most.
  4. Track AI referrals in your analytics. Segment traffic from chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com, claude.ai and perplexity.ai. If you are not measuring it, you will not notice when one engine quietly becomes your second-biggest source.
  5. Fix the site before the visibility work. AI engines cite fast, structured, trustworthy websites. If yours fails that test, citation tactics will not save it. Rebuilding sites so they earn citations is the work we do and our packages are priced for small businesses, not enterprises.

How should different markets respond? The principle is universal, the urgency varies by sector. Local service businesses should prioritise review recency and accurate business data, since assistants lean on those signals for “near me” style answers. Seasonal and hospitality businesses, including the UK tourism clients we work with, should get cited before their booking season, not during it. B2B and SaaS companies should weight Claude and Perplexity more heavily, because that is where their buyers already research.

Frequently asked questions

What is ChatGPT’s market share in 2026?

ChatGPT holds roughly 55% of worldwide AI chatbot web traffic as of June 2026, down from 87% in early 2025. Momentic’s June report puts it at 54.7% of web visits across the seven largest chatbots, with a higher 58.9% share in the United States.

Is Gemini bigger than ChatGPT now?

No. Gemini holds about 27% of chatbot web visits against ChatGPT’s 55% and Cloudflare’s network ranking still places ChatGPT first every day. Gemini is the fastest-scaling large assistant though, roughly doubling its traffic share in six months thanks to bundling with Android, Search and Workspace.

How fast is Claude growing in 2026?

Claude is the fastest-growing major chatbot by web visits, up about 306% in a single quarter, from 203 million visits in January 2026 to 824 million in April. Growth is concentrated in business and developer use, which underpins Anthropic’s $965 billion IPO valuation.

Which AI chatbot market share 2026 numbers should businesses trust?

Use all three measurements together. Web-visit panels show consumer browsing habits, Cloudflare’s network ranking shows real engagement across the internet and official user counts show scale. Each tells a different story, so any decision based on a single chart, including where to focus your visibility work, will be skewed.

Is ChatGPT dying?

No. ChatGPT reached 900 million weekly active users in February 2026, more than double the previous year and processes over 2 billion queries a day. Its share is falling because the overall market is growing faster than ChatGPT is, not because people are abandoning it.

How do I get my business recommended by AI chatbots?

Structure your website so engines can quote it: direct answers near the top of each page, dated and sourced claims, FAQ sections, schema markup and consistent business information across the web. Recent reviews and third-party mentions carry heavy weight. The same foundations work across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity.

Get visible on every engine, not just one

The AI chatbot market just became a genuine three-horse race and your customers are spread across all of them. The websites that win the next eighteen months will be the ones every engine can read, trust and cite. Most of the checklist above you can run yourself this week.
