Why is my website not showing on Google?

Search site:yourdomain.co.uk in Google. If pages come back, you are indexed plus the problem is ranking. If nothing comes back, Google does not have your site at all. Those are two completely different problems with two completely different fixes, so start there before anything else.

How do I check whether Google has my site?

Type site:yourdomain.co.uk into Google, with no space after the colon. The number of results is roughly how many of your pages Google is holding.

Step 1 · Google cannot get in

Fix whichever applies, then open Google Search Console, paste your homepage into the URL inspection bar plus press Request Indexing. Free, takes two minutes, plus it is the fastest route back in.

Step 2 · Google has some pages but not the ones you need

Open Search Console, Pages. It sorts every URL into indexed plus not indexed with a reason against each one. The two reasons that matter read like faults but are not.

• Crawled, currently not indexed. Google fetched the page then decided against keeping it. That is a quality verdict, not a bug. The page is usually thin. Near identical to another one. Or it answers nothing anybody searched for.
• Discovered, currently not indexed. Google knows the URL exists plus has not bothered fetching it. Normally means nothing on your site links to it.

Both are fixed the same way. Make the page worth keeping, then link to it from two or three pages that are already indexed. An orphan page with no internal links pointing at it is the single most common cause of this.

Requesting indexing on a thin page does not work. Google will fetch it again then decline again. Fix the page first.

Step 3 · You are indexed but nobody finds you

This is the real answer for most businesses asking this question, plus it is the one nobody wants to hear. Your site is not missing. It is on page seven.

Search the exact thing a customer would type. Not your company name, which you already win. Something like plumber salford or wedding photographer bolton. If you are nowhere, work down this list.

The first row is the answer far more often than the last one. A site with no page for what people type cannot rank for it, however good the site is. Building the missing page beats any amount of tuning on pages that were never about that search.

Why did my site disappear from Google suddenly?

A sudden vanishing is a different problem to never having shown up. Four causes, in order of how often they turn out to be it.

1. A redesign changed the URLs. Every old address now 404s plus every ranking went with it. Fixed by redirecting old URLs to the new ones.
2. The noindex flag came back. A staging copy got pushed live over the real site.
3. The domain or hosting lapsed. Check the site actually loads from a phone on mobile data, not from your own browser cache.
4. A ranking change. Least likely, most blamed. We covered how to tell in the August 2026 volatility post.

How long should it take to show up on Google?

Indexing takes 2 days to 4 weeks for a new site. Ranking for anything competitive takes 3 to 9 months. Ranking for your own town plus your own service, with a real page for it, is usually 4 to 12 weeks.

Anybody offering page one in thirty days for a competitive search is either targeting a search nobody makes or is not going to deliver it.

One more number worth knowing before you judge the result. Ranking first no longer means the traffic you expect. Around 60% of Google searches now end with no click at all, rising to near 74% on informational questions, because the answer appears above the results. On our own site a page sitting at position 17.5 out-earned the homepage, which sits at 4.5, because the search behind it was urgent. Position is not the score. Clicks are.

Questions people ask when their site is missing

Why does my website not show up when I Google my business name?

If your own name does not return your site, you are almost certainly not indexed at all. Run the site: check plus work through Step 1. A business name is the easiest search you will ever rank for, so failing it means Google does not have the site.

Do I need to pay Google to appear in search results?

No. Organic listings are free plus always have been. Google Ads buys the paid slots at the top only. Paying for ads does not improve your organic position.

Why does my competitor rank above me with a worse website?

Usually because they have a page aimed at that exact search plus you do not. Sometimes because they have reviews plus a complete Google Business Profile. Looking better is not a ranking factor. Answering the search is.

How do I get my website on the first page of Google?

Build a page for one specific thing people type, answer it in the first 50 words, publish real prices, then get listed on Google Business Profile with reviews. For local searches this order beats everything else per hour spent.

Does having no blog stop me ranking?

No. Plenty of sites rank with no blog at all. What stops you ranking is having no page for the search. A blog is one way to make those pages, never the only way, plus for local businesses the service plus town pages matter more.
