Key takeaways

  • Google rolled out five AI Overview changes on 6 May 2026, including inline citation links and Reddit Community Perspectives.
  • AI Overviews now appear on 12% of UK non-brand mobile searches and cut click-through rates by 61% on those queries.
  • Brands cited inside an AI Overview earn 120% more clicks per impression than uncited brands on the same query.
  • UK hospitality, including Greek hotels and restaurants, has lost 6.7% of organic traffic year on year since AI search rolled out.
  • The fix is AEO, not more SEO: structured answers, FAQ schema, fresh dates, primary sources and forum presence.
Google’s May 2026 AI Overview update added inline citation links, hover previews, a Subscribed news label, end-of-answer article suggestions and Reddit-style Community Perspectives. The changes reward sites that answer in clean blocks, cite primary sources and earn third-party mentions on forums. Sites that ignore the shift will keep losing clicks while their cited competitors take share.

Google’s May 2026 AI Overview update went live on 6 May. Five changes shipped at once, all aimed at the same problem: people read the AI summary at the top of the page and never click anything. The update is Google’s response to the criticism. It is also the most useful map we have had so far of what the AI search ranking signals actually are.

In our work with UK SMEs and Greek hospitality clients, we have already seen the impact. Sites that built clean answer blocks and earned forum mentions are getting cited and clicked. Sites that did neither are watching their organic numbers drift downward without an algorithm penalty to blame.

Here is what changed, what the data actually says and the 7-point survival plan we are running on every client site this quarter.

What changed on 6 May 2026?

Google announced five updates to AI Overviews and AI Mode on 6 May, all framed as better web discovery. Each one tells you something specific about how to get cited.

  1. Inline citation links. Source links now appear directly next to the relevant generated sentence, not just at the bottom of the answer. This means a single article can be cited in multiple positions within one AI Overview if different sentences map to different parts of your page.
  2. Hover previews on desktop. Hovering over an inline link shows a preview card of the destination page. A weak page title or stale featured image will cost you the click even after you have won the citation.
  3. The Subscribed label for news. If a user is signed in to a publisher’s subscription, results from that publisher get a Subscribed tag inside AI Overviews. Less relevant for SMEs, but a signal that Google is now blending personal context with AI answers.
  4. Article suggestions at the end of answers. Users see one or two related-article recommendations at the bottom of the AI Overview. Sites with strong topic clusters get pulled into these slots, single-article pages do not.
  5. Community Perspectives. Reddit threads, forum posts and named first-hand accounts now appear as quoted blocks inside AI answers. This is the biggest change for SMEs. Your Reddit presence, Trustpilot reviews, Greek hotel forum mentions and Stack Exchange answers now feed Google’s AI directly.

The clear message: structured answers, primary sources, topic depth and third-party mentions. The same signals ChatGPT uses to pick brands, now formalised inside Google.

Why does this hit UK and Greek sites hardest?

The UK and Greek markets share two problems that amplify the AI Overview impact and one advantage almost nobody is using.

The first problem is content density. UK SME and Greek hospitality sites tend to be short. A typical Greek hotel site has 6 to 10 pages, a typical UK plumber site has 5 to 8. AI Overviews favour sites with deep topic coverage because they can pull multiple sentences from the same source. A 6-page site has nowhere to be quoted.

The second problem is forum presence. Most UK SMEs and Greek SMEs do not engage on Reddit, Quora or industry forums. Now that Google’s Community Perspectives surface those exact sources, our clients are watching American competitors with active subreddits get quoted instead.

The advantage almost nobody is using is bilingual content. Greek businesses serving both Greek and English speakers can publish parallel content in both languages, which expands the citation surface dramatically. We have not seen a single Greek hospitality competitor doing this systematically yet.

What the data actually shows in 2026

The aggregate picture is grim, but the per-site picture is bimodal. Cited sites win. Uncited sites lose.

  • AI Overviews appear on 12% of UK non-brand mobile searches, up from 9% in late 2025, per BrightEdge tracking.
  • Click-through rate drops 61% on queries that trigger an AI Overview, per Ahrefs analysis of millions of SERPs.
  • Brands cited inside an AI Overview earn 120% more clicks per impression than uncited brands on the same query, per Seer Interactive 2026.
  • UK hospitality has lost 6.7% of organic traffic year on year, the worst-hit sector globally according to industry tracking.
  • Zero-click search in the UK and EU sits at 19.6%, lower than the 22.4% global average but climbing.

The takeaway is not “AI killed SEO”. The takeaway is that ranking position 1 means less than being cited inside the AI answer. Citation is the new top of the funnel.

What is the 2026 survival plan for UK and Greek SMEs?

Seven actions, in order. Run them on your highest-traffic pages first.

  1. Add an answer capsule to every page. A 40 to 80 word self-contained paragraph at the top that directly answers the page’s main question. This is what AI Overviews extract. Pages without one are invisible to citation.
  2. Add FAQPage schema to every commercial page. Four to seven question-and-answer pairs in JSON-LD. FAQ schema is currently the highest-ROI markup for AEO and ships citation-ready chunks straight to Google’s AI.
  3. Publish a Last updated date. 76% of ChatGPT citations come from pages updated within the last 30 days. The same recency bias applies to AI Overviews. Refresh top pages quarterly and date them visibly.
  4. Build topic clusters, not single articles. Article suggestions at the end of AI answers now favour sites with multiple related pieces. One article on a topic gets ignored. Five interlinked articles get pulled together.
  5. Earn Reddit and forum mentions. Spend an hour a week answering questions in your industry’s subreddit using your real name. Community Perspectives now feeds those answers into AI Overviews directly. This is the cheapest citation channel that exists.
  6. Add a /llms.txt file. A plain-text file at your domain root telling AI crawlers which pages to prioritise. Adoption is still under 5% of UK sites, so it is a free ranking signal for now.
  7. Strip robots.txt blocks on AI bots. Many UK and Greek WordPress sites accidentally block GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot through default SEO plugin settings. Audit your robots.txt this week.

If this is the kind of work you want a hand with, here is what we do and our pricing starts at £695 for the foundation tier.

How should UK, Greek and international sites respond differently?

The seven points above apply everywhere. The execution priority differs by market.

UK SMEs should lead with the answer capsule and FAQ schema work. Most UK SME sites already rank in Google, so the gap is structural formatting, not authority. Quick wins inside 4 to 6 weeks.

Greek hospitality and SMEs should lead with bilingual content and forum presence. Greek-language Community Perspectives are almost empty inside Google’s AI right now, so being first into Greek subreddits and TripAdvisor-style platforms compounds fast. Bilingual pages also double the citation surface.

International businesses serving the UK or Greece should add local context pages. A US SaaS company that publishes a “GDPR compliance for UK users” page or a “Setting up payments in Greece” page suddenly becomes citable inside Google’s AI for those geographic queries. Local-context content is the highest-impact international move in 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Google AI Overview update from May 2026?

The Google AI Overview update from May 2026 rolled out on 6 May. It added five features: inline citation links inside the AI answer, hover previews on desktop, a Subscribed label for news subscriptions, related-article suggestions and Community Perspectives that quote Reddit and forum posts directly inside AI Overviews.

How much traffic are UK small businesses losing to AI Overviews?

Click-through rates drop 61% on UK queries where an AI Overview appears and AI Overviews now show on 12% of UK non-brand mobile searches. The UK hospitality sector, including Greek hotels marketing to UK travellers, has lost 6.7% of organic traffic year on year.

What is AEO and is it different from SEO?

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimisation. It is the discipline of structuring your content so AI engines like Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini cite it as the source of their answer. SEO gets you ranked, AEO gets you quoted. You need both in 2026, across more engines than ever: the AI chatbot market share 2026 data shows ChatGPT down to 55% of AI traffic while Gemini and Claude surge.

How long does AEO take to work for a UK or Greek small business?

Most UK and Greek small businesses see AEO results within 6 to 12 weeks. Pages that already rank in positions 1 to 5 in Google typically earn AI Overview citations fastest, often within 2 to 4 weeks of adding FAQ schema and an answer capsule.

Do I need a new website to win AI Overview citations?

No, in most cases. If your site is on WordPress and ranks somewhere in Google, you can add answer capsules, FAQ schema and a fresh updated date to your top 10 pages without a rebuild. A new site only makes sense if your current build is on outdated tech that blocks AI crawlers or schema.

Want one of the sites that wins citations, not loses clicks?

The May 2026 update did not break UK or Greek SME websites. It changed which ones get clicked. The sites that adapt in the next three months will compound an unfair advantage, the ones that wait will keep watching their numbers slide.
